Colwyn Bay FC Player Profiles

24-08-08 GOALKEEPING CRISIS AVERTED
Following an incredible run of injuries in the first two matches of the season sustained to goalkeepers Farai Jackson and Chris Sanna, Colwyn Bay FC have managed to avert a crisis by gaining permission from the FAW & Unibond League in order to register Matt Parry in time for tomorrows Bank Holiday Monday home game against Woodley Sports. Parry had recently been allowed to join Ruthin Town FC of the Cymru Alliance in order to gain match practise.

During both games Defender Neil Coverley stepped up to fill in the position and a heroic effort against Durham for 85 mins saw the defender come goalkeeper keep a clean sheet.

Matt Parry will become the 3rd goalkeeper to start a game in the first 3 games of the season. Manager Steve Pope commented “In of mine and Oggy’s time in football we have never come across this situation where we have lost 2 goalkeepers in the first two matches. We’ve been fortunate that we managed to sign 3 quality keepers at the start of the season. I’d like to thank the footballing authorities for allowing us to register Matty in time for tomorrows game.”

Former Wrexham, Brighton and Shrewsbury Goalkeeper Mark Cartwright is also now set to sign as emergency cover. Cartwright is also the clubs goalkeeping coach.

22-08-08: "MORAN LOAN DEAL SIGNIFICANT" - MD
After international clearance was finally received this evening for the loan signing of Andy Moran, Managing Director Darren Cartwright explains how significant the deal is for the club "The initial deal with Fleetwood Town for the loan signing of Andy Moran was agreed over 2 weeks ago but the restrictions on the temporary loan that were initially placed on us meant that we would of had to take the player until the next transfer window – a period of almost 6 months. This blew the deal out of the water. As a result, both the Chairman and I travelled down to Cardiff and held a meeting with the FAW as well as fellow "exile" clubs Merthyr Tydfil & Newport AFC who both pledged their support to us.”

“We explained to the FAW that there a number of restrictions placed on us that put us at a disadvantage as opposed to the teams that we have to compete against in our league. After extensive discussions, the FAW took our views into account and in consultation with the English FA the deal was allowed to go through along with further agreement reached with regards to future loan deals.”

"In spite of our unique position of being a Welsh club playing in the English system, all that we are asking for is to be allowed to compete on fair terms against the teams in our league. We still have other issues such as the one player one club ruling which we will also attempt to address but this is a breakthrough.

We have built good links with Conference and League side's and are looking to use that to our advantage in terms of the players that we can potentially bring in and also help allow us coverage for injuries."

"I would like to thank the FAW Registration team for their assistance and for liaising on our behalf with their counterparts at the English FA and also Fleetwood Town Chairman Andy Pilley and manager Tony Greenwood for their patience and agreement in getting the deal back on. They are convinced that Andy Moran will do the business and bang the goals in for us."

Moran goes straight into the squad for this weekend’s Bank Holiday fixtures starting with Durham away on Saturday with Woodley Sports the visitors to Llanelian Road on Bank Holiday Monday, kick off 3pm.

22-08-08: STRIKER SET TO JOIN IN LOAN DEAL
Colwyn Bay FC have secured an agreement for a one month loan deal for prolific Fleetwood Town and former Rhyl Striker Andy Moran.

Moran scored 47 goals in 2003/4 when Rhyl FC won the Welsh Premier, Welsh Cup and League Cup, and has a total of 99 goals from 148 games for the club. Wigan-born Moran was previously at Hereford United and Bamber Bridge. Moran scored nine goals in 19 starts for Rhyl last season before being sold to Unibond Premier League Champions Fleetwood Town for a substantial four-figure fee, scoring on his debut.

Managing Director Darren Cartwright said "We have agreed terms with the club and the player and are now awaiting the necessary clearances for the deal to go through, hopefully, in time for this bank holiday weekend's matches against Durham and Woodley."

Moran will strengthen Steve Pope's attacking options along with Hopley, Frost, McIntosh and Dean Canning who can also play as a forward.

Former Glamorgan and England cricketer Mathew Maynard has agreed to become a patron of Colwyn Bay Football Club. Matthew kindly accepted the position during a presentation evening which followed Colwyn Bay FC’s successful annual Golf Day held at Rhuddlan Golf Club.

Matthew commented “I’m delighted to be offering my support and will attend matches as often as I can. I also think it’s terrific that Colwyn Bay Football Club have sacrificed revenue from shirt sponsorship in order to support the local children’s hospice, Ty Gobaith.  It shows so much about the calibre of the people at Colwyn Bay FC and they deserve to succeed and be well supported.”

Colwyn Bay Football Club’s newly appointed Club Vice-President John Martin said “Its fantastic to have a North Wales sporting icon associated with our football club. Matthew carries himself so well and is incredibly well-respected in sport.  It can only do our football club and the community good and it’s also a measure of the progress Colwyn Bay FC have made that people like Matthew are keen to get involved and help support the club."

About Matthew Maynard
Brought up in North Wales, Maynard was a skilled batsman famed for his aggressive and dashing stroke play. His sparkling first-class career with Glamorgan, which saw him achieve a batting average of 42.53, take 372 catches and make 7 stumping’s with the gloves, earned him several caps for England.

He was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1998. His career started in fine fashion when he hit a century on is debut in 1985, hitting three consecutive sixes to reach the 100 and he became the youngest-ever player to score 1000 runs for the country in 1986.

The 54 centuries he scored for Glamorgan during his playing career is also a record - the most any player has scored for the club.  These displays of skill did not go unnoticed by the England selectors and he earned a call-up against the West Indies at The Oval in 1988.

Back in domestic cricket, Maynard captained Glamorgan for five seasons between 1995 and 2000. His achievement as captain included leading them to victory in the County Championship in 1997 and their first appearance since 1977 in a cup final at Lord's in 2000.

In September 2004 he was appointed as assistant coach to the England cricket team and announced his retirement as a player shortly after.

Maynard was mentioned in the Manic Street Preachers b-side "Mr. Carbohydrate" with the lyric, "Have you heard of Matthew Maynard/He's my favourite cricketer/I would rather watch him play than pick up my guitar."

05-08-08: COLWYN BAY FC ANNOUNCE LOCAL CHARITY LINK-UP
Colwyn Bay Football Club are delighted to announce that they have formed a partnership with local charity Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospice which will see the charities logo featured on the Seagulls shirts this season.

Managing Director Darren Cartwright announced the link up at Llanelian Road today.

Cartwright said: "This is an exciting partnership for both parties. We are looking to use Colwyn Bay FC to help raise awareness of the charity and also support their fund raising activites with a number of joint ventures. We believe that this will also benefit the club by opening us up to a new network of support. We are keen to ensure that this football club becomes an integral part of the local community. The club has been very well supported by the community in the past and this is our opportunity to give something back and help support a great local cause. "

Colwyn Bay Football Club Commercial Manager Carol Beard added “We hope the partnership will give our supporters, staff and players the opportunity to learn and support Ty Gobaith’s work and their broader mission”

As part of the partnership Colwyn Bay Football Club plan to organise a charity football game along with various other fund raising initiatives with proceeds going to Ty Gobaith.

Ty Gobaith Appeals Organiser Beverley Bradley comments “I would like to thank Colwyn Bay Football Club very much for adopting Ty Gobaith Childrens Hospice as their Charity for the year. We are very much looking forward to working together during 2008/09. Each year we need to raise £1million to provide the special care to our seriously ill children at our children’s hospice, based just outside Conwy, we could not do this without the fantastic donations we receive from the community”

On 16th July, 2004 Ty Gobaith opened its doors for the very first time.  It is now 4 years since they began offering their unique service to families throughout North Wales.

Four years on much has changed, but much has stayed the same in their two children’s hospices Ty Gobaith in Conwy and Hope House in Oswestry:

  • They  provide respite & terminal care for seriously-ill children
  • They  still do not charge families for using their services
  • They  still depend upon voluntary income to fund our vital work and are indebted to everyone who has helped in the past four years.

Facilities at the Hospices include:

  • 4 individual children’s bedrooms
  • 3 parent/families rooms
  • Multi sensory room
  • Computer room
  • Therapy room
  • Bereavement bedroom and private garden
  • Newly built playground

Ty Gobaith need to raise £1million a year to deliver the vital services that they offer children & families and are dependant entirely on fundraising activities and donations.
