07-07-07: SPONSOR A SEAT
Colwyn Bay FC needs YOUR help to revamp ground and stay in league.
Football chiefs must net the support of Colwyn Bay soccer fans if they are to avoid relegation.
Commercial manager and fundraiser Carol Beard wants the Bay community to unite in support of Colwyn Bay FC, which needs to make substantial changes to its Llanelian Road ground before June if it is to avoid dropping out of Unibond Division One.
The Seagulls are flying high on the pitch, but events off it could see them relegated to the North West counties league, which is why the club committee has unveiled a sponsor-a-seat scheme.
Each seat costs £30, and the club need 250 altogether, as Carol explains. “I hope Weekly News readers will get behind us and sponsor a seat so we can reach our target,” said Carol. “We’re asking them to make a small commitment to the future of this club and help us maintain a good standard of football in Colwyn Bay.” A Football Association ground-grading report has revealed a substantial need for improvements by the summer. At a fans’ forum earlier this year, those in attendance discussed a need to relocate the press box and provide lighting, ensure there are appropriate changing facilities for female officials, improve toilet facilities, and deal with the grassed areas within the ground. New fencing is also vital, as well as a general tidy-up.
“This work needs completing by the end of March and we are appealing for help to meet this goal,” added Carol. “We also have to complete more substantial structural alterations. This involves the creation of new, bigger dugouts, which we propose to place on the terrace side of the ground, fitting 250 tip-up seats under the covered terrace with an identified directors’ area, the conversion of the current seated stand into a standing area, and moving the pitch surround barrier back on the terrace side to ensure the required space is created.
“The club is run by volunteers and many people are rallying round but we really need Weekly News readers to help us with the sponsor-a-seat scheme.
“The clock is ticking and we want the community to band together for Colwyn Bay FC. If they don’t there’s a danger we’ll have to drop down a division, and that would be a travesty.”
