COLWYN BAY VS WREXHAM
Colwyn Bay welcomed Wrexham to a sunny Llanelian road for the Seagulls second pre match game in the build up to the new season. There was a minutes silence held before the match in memory of club President Glynne Owens who passed away earlier in the day after a long illness.
With over half an hour gone, Colwyn Bay had more than held their own against what looked a very useful Wrexham side, but once again the curse of the keeper was to strike for the second year running as Fariah Jackson pulled up with a torn calf muscle. Danny Jarrett put the keeper’s shirt on to get the Bay to half time where the team would be able to reshuffle.
Three minutes after the restart, Sam Williamson latched onto a long ball and and drove into the box. Jarrett came down to close the angle, but as he hesitated, Williamson lifted the ball over Jarrett to give the Dragons the lead.
It was a Mark Jones who doubled the visitors lead after he collected a Bay clearance and spotted Jarrett off his line. His first time shot from nearly 40 yards sailed over Jarrett and into the back of the net.
Dave Challinor made an earlier than expected return to the team as he put on the keepers Jersey and with Jarrett now playing at centre half along side Matt Holt, it looked like the Bay were going to shut out Wrexham for the second half, but with just ten minutes to go, Simon Brown was caught after he fired his shot well wide of the target. His blushes were saved as the official pointed to the spot, which Brown took himself and fired the ball into the roof of the net.
Reflecting on the game, Neil Young commented "I thought we did quite well in the first half and got behind them a few times to create some chances, but after the injury to Jacko we were always going to be up against it without a recognised keeper. We gave a couple of poor goals away because of that."
